SSX Series

The SSX series has had its ups and downs over the years, but it looks like its finally coming back to its roots with SSX Deadly Descents! (working title)

SSX: From the very beginning this game was a hit! With its unrealistic tracks and off-the-wall tricks that were never before possible, everyone loved it! It is one of the first games for the PlayStation 2 and also one of the first to achieve Greatest Hits status. This game is capable of TONS of hours of gameplay! With 8 playable characters and so many attributes, outfits, and boards to buy, leveling up every character to the max takes superlative skill. If you look at the rating descriptors, you might be wondering what kind of language can be in a game rated E. Well I personally haven’t heard anything offensive, but if there is anything, it would be during gameplay while the players are talking to each other on the tracks.

SSX Tricky: “More than just an upgrade of the original, SSX Tricky is the best snowboarding game ever made.” GameSpot’s quote says it all. Personally, SSX 3 was the best in my opinion, but many gamers say that SSX Tricky is exactly what GameSpot says. Having not played the game, I have no first-hand experience. But I do know, it is something like SSX 3, from what I have heard. Also, the language is about the same as SSX, also from what I have heard.

SSX 3: The peak of the games series in my opinion! Although a little short, getting 100% completion with one character would take any gamer at least 48 hours to complete. With the most characters of all the games, there are hundreds of things to buy from the stores! Luckily this is the first game in the series with no language descriptor!

SSX On Tour: As appealing as it looks, this game will only be enjoyable for newcomers to the series. SSX had so much original feel in the first 3 games, but in on tour, it felt like they were trying to be…too original. First off, SSX has always been about snowboarding, but this time, your character can snowboard OR ski. This being odd to the veteran hardcore SSX players because in most of the characters’ biographies, one of the things most of them hate is skiers. So why would they be skiing if they hate skiers? Also, they kept a lot of the original characters, but you would barely recognize them since they have changed their appearances so drastically! Many new characters have been introduced in this game also, but none of them seem to fit, as they did in SSX 3. This is probably the most offensive of the games from a Christian standpoint. The players and announcers talk is worse than any other game in the series and one of the levels is called “Son of a Birch” being there are birch trees everywhere, but I think you can tell what the producers were hinting at when they named this level.

SSX Blur: Since Blur was released in 2007, it has no Balance Board compatibility. If it did, I think this game would be a more solid SSX entry. I have not played this game either, but from what I have read, it is almost a clone of SSX 3, which sounds bad, but doesn’t sound as bad as if it were a clone of SSX On Tour. Some people might not like it, since it isn’t Balance Board compatible and they would rather sit down and push buttons for tricks, rather than flick their wrists to do them. Since I have not played the game I can say nothing about the amount of offensive content.

SSX: Deadly Descents (working title): Although its being released in January 2012, there is less information than expected from the latest SSX entry. It is said that SSX will return to its roots though, which is a major excitement for may players. At the end of SSX On Tour (which was supposed to be the last game in the series) with each character you beat the game with, there will be a different cutscene for each person with what they did with the rest of their life, most of which, moved on from snowboarding for some unapparent reason. The story in this game is that some of the characters have returned to snowboarding to challenge the best SSX characters to the 7 Deadly Descents. These deadly descents will be real world locations such as Mount Kilimanjaro rather that the usual unrealistic other SSX tracks. The devs say these tracks won’t be boring just because they are real mountains though, they have altered them in different ways yet to be revealed. Being released in 2012 for the Xbox 360 and PS3, this game will be the largest and most stunning SSX game yet. Online play will allow up to 100,000 players at once on one server!

Overall, the SSX series scores an A in my book and I hope it does in yours too! If you haven’t played either SSX game yet, go to your local GameStop and pick up a copy of the original for PS2! Or If you like you can start right out with SSX Tricky or SSX 3. Neither of the games have interlocking stories, so you can pick up either game you like, whenever you like.
